MOSCOW, June 2 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia called on Ethiopia and Eritrea “to act more purposefully in promoting the process of a peaceful settlement”, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday concerning the adoption of the UN resolution on prolonging the mandate of the UN Mission in the countries.
“The document envisages the preservation of the mandate in its previous form with a considerable reduction of the military component of the Mission to 2300 men”, the ministry said adding that Russia believes “the main criteria in resolving such issues should be a strict compliance between the mandate of the peacekeeping operation and the forces provided for it”.
“Russia continues to be interested in a constructive settlement of disputed issues on border delimitation between Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is necessary to resume efforts for an adequate fulfillment by UN peacekeepers of their functions, including through the lifting of restrictions on their activities imposed by the government of Eritrea”, the ministry said.
