90,000 people now displaced in Ethiopia

The epicentre of the clashes and violence has been in the zone of Borena
(400km south of the capital) between the Borena pastoralists and Guji clans.

Some 90,000 people have been displaced by clashes over land between local communities in southern Ethiopia, since the start of June leaving over 100 dead in three different districts.

Administrative authorities of the Arero area, around 450km south of Addis Ababa, say that since the start of the month some 29,000 people have fled their homes.

In the area around the city of Yabello, 500km from the capital, aid workers operating in the area reported the presence of between 37,000 and 39,000 displaced.

While in the area of Shakiso (380km from Addis Ababa), the displaced are around 20,000.

The epicentre of the clashes and violence has been in the zone of Borena (400km south of the capital) between the Borena pastoralists and Guji clans. The battle broke out after a recent jurisdictional adjustment assigned the Guji land that belonged to the Borena.
