Somalia US-backed warlords surrender

The fighting has ended but, peace still seems a long way off

The last of Mogadishu's US-backed warlords surrendered today. This, after the Somali capital was seized by Islamic fundamentalists, nearly a month ago.More than 140 people have been killed in gunfire and explosions since Sunday. The fighting has ended but, peace still seems a long way off. Islamic fundamentalists have now taken over as an alternative political power, banning movies, television and music. The US wanted warlords to win, as it fears al-Qaeda could find a safe haven in Somalia. But that country's UN established interim government - has now been rendered even more powerless.
