Cairo, Egypt (AHN) - Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit on Monday warns that the war in Somalia could escalate into a full-blown regional conflict and could threaten the future of the Horn of Africa.

Abul Gheit issued the warning as he sends his message to his counterparts in Ethiopia, Erithrea and three member-states of the United Nations Security Council including the United States, Britain and France about the grave situation in Somalia.

He called on international and regional powers to increase pressure and efforts to stop the armed conflict in Somalia and avoid the outbreak of a regional war "of far reaching repercussions."

On Thursday, violence between fighters loyal to Somalia's Transitional Federal Government, which has the backing of the Ethiopian army, and its rival the Union of Islamic Courts resumed, despite a truce forged by an EU envoy.

Also on Monday, fighter jets from Ethiopia attacked the international airport in the Somalian capital of Mogadishu which was controlled by the UIC.

Abul Gheir warns that the Somalian conflict would create a hotbed of violence in the Horn of Africa and make the nation into a fertile ground for extremism.

Somalia has not had an effective central government since the overthrow of former ruler Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 by warlords in the region. These warlords eventually turned against each other.

The UIC now controls Mogadishu and much of the rest of the war-ravaged Horn of Africa nation, while the interim government, which formed two years ago, has been unable to assert its authority over the country.
