Athletes begin track training in Ethiopia

BAHRAIN'S Maryam Yusuf Jamal and Youssef Saad Kamel began on-the-track training yesterday at their camp in Ethiopia, their coach Tareq Sabt said.

The pair arrived at the Addis Ababa camp last week, and have been practising solely on the road until yesterday. Their move to the track signalled that their programme is set to intensify.

"They will now get a chance to run faster than what they had been doing so far," Coach Sabt told the GDN by phone last night.

"We usually begin practice on the track when we near a competition, so now our training is going to get more intensive.

"Both of them are also doing endurance and distance preparations on the track, which is different when practising on the road because of the surface. We will also continue with lots of jogging in the forest and in higher altitudes, but our main focus will be on the track now."

Maryam and Kamel are gearing up for an action-packed season that includes the Beijing 2008 Olympics, which both have said is their main focus. They are scheduled to begin competitive racing in Valencia next month.

Meanwhile, Bahrain is set to take part in Kuwait's Athletics Youth Championships in March.

Bahrain Athletics Association president Shaikh Talal bin Mohammed Al Khalifa will talk about the issue when he chairs a board meeting at 7pm tonight, during which the Kingdom's athletics achievements last year and the projected budget will also be discussed.
