DHUSAMAREB, Somalia Jan 21 (Garowe Online) - The commander of the Ethiopian troops in central Somalia escaped an assassination attempt Saturday night, according to residents in Dhusamareb town.

Unknown fighters placed a timed landmine on a road used by the Ethiopian colonel and his military convoy, but the landmine exploded unexpectedly before the Ethiopian convoy drove through.

No one was reported injured in the incident.

According to a military source, the landmine was purposefully planted to kill the Ethiopian army officer, who was at the time on his way to the 21st Military Base, which houses Somali and Ethiopian troops in the Dhusamareb area.

Soldiers began to investigate who was behind the planned attack and detained 10 suspects in connection with the explosion.

Since the Ethiopian army ousted the Islamic Courts militia from central and south Somalia last month, there have been a series of organized attacks, especially in Mogadishu, carried out by unknown gunmen against allied Somali and Ethiopian troops.

Dhusamareb town is the home region of Islamist chief Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys.
