Sanaa, 5 Feb. (AKI) - The government of Yemen has decided to grant political asylum to the former leader of Somalia's Union of Islamic Courts, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, who gave himself up to Kenyan authorities last month. According to a report on the London-based Arabic daily al-Quds al-Arabi, a government source in the Yemeni capital Sanaa believes that the Yemen government considers Sharif to be a moderate leader who could help avert the resurgence of violence that has plagued Somalia for the past 13 years.
Yemen's foreign minister Abu Bakr al-Qurbi, said that if Sharif "made a request to the Yemeni authorities for asylum, the government is available to receive it and is convinced that Sharif's contribution will be a positive one in view of a conference of Somali national reconciliation."
Yemeni sources predict that Sharif could be in Yemen by Monday together with other representatives of Somalia's Union of Islamic Courts.
