Ethiopian man accused of stabbing two women in Florida
A man accused of stalking and stabbing two women made an appearance in court.
WSVN Miami Beach Police said 24-year-old Kidane Mengesha, a native of Ethiopia, stalked and stabbed two women Saturday night. The attack happened as police patrolled the area in South Pointe Park during the height of spring break.
According to police, at around 9 p.m. Saturday, 20-year-old Belkin Gutierrez and Leigh-Ann Martinez, 19, were walking down Collins towards South Pointe Park when Mengesha approached them. "He was trying to engage them in a conversation. They repeatedly told him, 'Please leave us alone,'" Miami Beach Police detective Juan Sanchez said.
Police said the suspect then took out a knife and repeatedly stabbed Gutierrez. Martinez suffered one stab wound. Police arrived to the scene a few minutes later and arrested Mengesha.
Mengesha made his first appearance in court Monday. He has been charged with attempted second degree murder and aggravated battery.
