U.N. Eritrea peacekeepers expelled

U.N. Eritrea peacekeepers expelled

ASMARA, Eritrea, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Eritrea has expelled some of the U.N. peacekeepers, raising fears of renewed hostilities with neighboring Ethiopia.

Those expelled were peacekeepers from 10 countries including Canada, Russia, Europe and the United States, reports the BBC.

In a letter to the U.N. mission, the Eritrean government gave staff members of those nationalities 10 days to leave but gave no reasons.

Peacekeepers had been monitoring the border under a peace deal in 2000 that ended the 1998 war between the two resulting from their border dispute.

There are some 3,300 peacekeepers and military observers from some 40 countries, 191 civilians and 74 U.N. volunteers working at the mission in Eritrea and Ethiopia, the report said. Ethiopia is still to vacate its forces from the town of Badme, which was awarded to Eritrea.
