The ever increasing repression of Oromos and other people in Ethiopia has become a big concern for Oromo youth across the globe. The disturbing news that rarely gets reported by international media is a daily occurrence for the Oromo mass in Ethiopia and neighboring countries which compelled us to get up and march in hopes of bringing public awareness to the alarming human rights violations in Ethiopia. As recent as March 5, 2009, the Ethiopian government brutally beat many Oromo students and arrested over 80 of them from Bahir Dar University merely for asking certain individuals be brought to justice for their derogatory remarks towards Oromia and Oromos as well.

Ethiopian man convicted of 2nd-degree murder in death of 20-year-old ex-girlfriend

An Ethiopian man who said he was suffering from a psychosis when he fatally stabbed his girlfriend was convicted yesterday of second-degree murder.

Relatives of Arssei Hindessa's victim -- Ryerson student Natalie Novak, 20 -- were visibly outraged when jurors acquitted the killer of the more serious charge of first-degree murder.

"You're a natural-born killer, just like your father," snarled Novak's aunt, Georgia.

Hindessa's father was a warrior for independence in their homeland. Hindessa testified during his trial that he was tortured and scarred for life for his political activism in Ethiopia and suffered from a psychosis at the time he murdered Novak.

The jury deliberated for six days before rendering its verdict. A female juror was excused Sunday from deliberations after she exhibited signs of a mental breakdown.

Novak's father, Ed, was crimson-faced, while Natalie's mom wiped away tears as the verdict was announced.

The jury's finding meant it rejected Hindessa's story that he was suffering from a psychosis at the time and was therefore unable to form the intent to murder.

Justice Anne Molloy will sentence Hindessa on May 25. A second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence with parole eligibility ranging from 10 to 25 years.

Hindessa's father was a co-founder of the Oromo Liberation Front, which fought for independence against another tribe in Ethiopia.

Hindessa described his horrific experiences of being tortured and sexually assaulted as an imprisoned student activist in Ethiopia.

Hindessa, 32, flatly denied he planned or thought of killing Novak on May 15, 2006. Novak was stabbed several times in the chest and had her throat slashed.

"Hindessa is a liar and a manipulator. He may have a mental illness, but it had nothing to do with the murder. When he killed Natalie Novak, he was not suffering from a psychosis or a delusion," Crown attorney Mary Humphrey told jurors in her closing address. "The murder was about anger and control. He gave six different versions of what occurred."

Hindessa was under a restraining order not to see Novak after being convicted of assaulting her.

In a statement, the victim's family urged the province to implement changes to stop the tide of domestic violence that takes the lives of 45 women and children every year.

I just finished , “Ye Burka Zimita” by Tesfaye Gebrab a book that came out more than ten years ago currently posted on pdf file and became a hot item in our Eedn community. Those who put it on Internet without getting the permission of the author should apologize and the thousands who read the book on Internet should send a check to Ato Tesfaye Gebrab voluntarily any amount they choose.

Let me said from outset that the book I read and completed few seconds ago on Internet is a book to be read by all Ethiopians. The “Historical Fiction” of “Ye Burka Zimita” is a book that narrates Oromos abuse in the Arsi surroundings under Emperor Menelik administration, “Hager Makenate” which is still going on under the name of “self determination” by Meles TPLF.

Like all military subjugation of people, “Hager Makenate” , in most countries brutal wars fought to dominate people, and “Ye Burka Zimita” narrates that and we shouldn’t attack the writer and blame him for the loss of innocent lives in the surroundings of Arsi following the takeover of Addis Ababa eighteen years ago by TPLF for which many blamed the writer for his part for inflaming the situation. The writer explained himself on the VOA Amharic interview recently for millions of Ethiopians back home an we should take his word.

The book, Ye Burka Zimita, has many characters, Anole Wako the uncompromising young Oromo and his compromising lover/sister, Hiwone Wako, but the big character in this book is the late Hayalome Araya. Hayalome was the “peoples man” and the secret way of releasing Anole the man that led “Yeburka Massacre” after he was cornered in the hills of Arsi to escape to Asmara and continue his “rebellion” as OLF or as Hayalome said to convert Anole to join the TPLF Oromo wing is still debatable. It is the known TPLF tactics of instigating fights among communities and be seen as a honest broker or judge.

Military and civil power by TPLF and its Oromo wing, corruption and womanizing destroyed the “liberation struggle” as was elaborated by many characters on the book . Many connected with the regime are filthy rich, replaced their wives with young Addis Ababeans and Ethiopia divided in to few millionaires and millions of very poor people. Like the farmers surrounding Arsi, the whole Ethiopia looks quite for now and some foreign experts even telling us that Ethiopia is even more stable than USA.

However, the contempt and the arrogance of the regime is not a recipe for stability. To bring real stability, change and hope we have to be open to our past and present and not be a prisoner of it . We have a common proud history and also shameful past. Unelected leaders, unaccountable to their people have brought great harm to the masses and we should talk about it honestly.

I am asking fellow Ethiopians to read, “Ye Burka Zimtia” in open mind and take it for what it is, “Historical Fiction”.We have read similar books on native Americans and black Americans experiences.However, this generation of Americans, White Americans,native Americans and Black Americans, learn from the past and move on and not wasted their time debating history that should be left to historians.

Ethiopia launches $16 million television station


APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Ethiopia on Wednesday launched a $16 million television station, which claims to be the first of its kind in the country in using latest technical equipment.

The regional TV station, located in Nazareth, some 100 kiloemtres east of Addis Ababa, was launched for the Oromia regional state of Ethiopia, which is the biggest of the other eight regional states of Ethiopia.

This is the second television owned by the Ethiopian government. There is as yet no private television in Ethiopia, home to around 77 million people.

There are however three private FM radio stations in Addis Ababa, and a number of community radio stations in other regions of the country.

However, at the launch of the new TV station, the Ethiopian President Girma Woldegiorgise said that several state and private media have been approved and are in the process of being established in the country.

President Woldegiorgise said that the station not only benefits the regional state, but also contributes to bringing the other nations, nationalities and the people of Ethiopia closer, strengthen the democratic system, build the national image and contribute towards realization of Ethiopia’s vision.

The station started a daily 30 minute transmission in the Ethiopian federal language-Amharic-and a four hour transmission in Oromifa, which is the regional language of Oromia regional state, which also has the largest number of speakers, next to Amharic in Ethiopia.

Our first day in Addis Ababa we woke up to wedding music playing outside the hotel. We had traveled for 20 hours and we were deeply asleep. The music entered my sleep in the form of moving lights, like fireflies or animate laughter, in a pattern, but a loose and playful one. I was dreaming that I was with Thomas. In the dream, he was very young, and we were chasing a light that had come free of the others, running down a winding path with darkness all around.

When I woke at first I did not know where I was. The music seemed more real than the dingy room; its sound saturated me with happiness and pain. Then I saw Katya and remembered where we were and why. She was already up and standing at the window lifting a shade to peer out — the sun made a warm place on her skin and I felt affection for her known form in this unknown place. She turned and said, "Janice, there's weddings going on outside — plural!"

We went outside. All around our hotel were gardens, and in the gardens were crowds of people dressed in the bright colors of undiluted joy. Brides and grooms were wearing white satin, and the streets were lined with white limousines decked with flowers, and together with so much color, the white also seemed colorful. Little girls in red-and-white crinoline ran past, followed by a laughing woman. Everyone was laughing or smiling, and because I could not tell where the music came from, I had the sensation that it was coming directly from these smiling, laughing people. Katya turned to me and said, "Are we in heaven?"

I replied, "I don't know," and for a second I meant it.

My husband Thomas had died six months before the trip to Addis Ababa. The music that woke me that first day touched my grief even before I knew it was wedding music. Even in my sleep I could hear love in it; even in my sleep, I could hear loss. I stepped out of the hotel in a state of grief, but when I saw the brides and grooms in their happiness, wonder slowly spread through my grief. It was like seeing my past and a future that was no longer mine but that I was part of anyway.

In the dirty hotel restaurant we had dry brick-like croissants and lots of good fruit — papaya, mangoes, bananas, oranges, and pineapple. The coffee was burnt, so we decided to go to the espresso place we'd been told was just a few blocks away. We never found the place, although we walked a long time. At first, we walked on a crowded street made of pavement, with department stores, an Internet café, and a grocery with a big Magic Marker drawing (green and red) of fruit and vegetables in the window. Starving wandered freely. The pavement abruptly fell off and gave way to rocks. We saw another wedding party, in a Mercedes decked with rich-colored flowers, moving through a herd of donkeys, the herders lagging behind, talking on their cells. Beggars swarmed around us, shouting and showing us their deformed limbs, their blind eyes. We forgot our espresso. The rocky street gave way to dirt with pools of muddy water. Houses, patched together with tin, plastic, canvas and wood, bulged out, sagged in, lurched and leaned this way, then that. Beggars swarmed us, chanting. Wedding guests in gold pants and silky shirts pushed their broken car through slowly parting pedestrians. A little boy marched along blowing a horn; he was followed by a smaller boy, who was shouting and rhythmically shaking a clutch of bells on a strap. The smell of fresh [expletive] rose up suddenly and mixed with the odors of sweat and cooked meat. An old woman seated in the roots of a giant tree sold bundled sticks and dresses mounted on smiling white mannequins. Trees made soft, blunt, deep green shapes with their boughs. Katya turned to me, her face dazed. "We'd better go back," she said. "We're getting lost."

Katya was in Ethiopia to adopt a baby; I was there to help her. Katya asked me to go with her because I am one of her oldest friends, going back to our waitressing days in Manhattan. She is a narrow little woman with a broad, bossy air: ugly-beautiful, full lower lip a bit too pendulous, hips and breasts small but highly charged, black hair big, curly, and shining with secreted oil. The restaurant we worked in was run by Mafia thugs, and they would sometimes come in before the shift to do coke with us. The head thug really liked Katya; he would confide in her and ask her advice and she would console him and boss him around.

In those days I was putting myself through a writing program; she was having experiences. I got married and turned into an English professor who publishes stories in quarterly magazines. She started various businesses, which she either failed at or got bored with and sold. She had family money to begin with, and in spite of the failures along the way, she has actually amassed some money of her own. She now runs a boutique in D.C., which is where she lives. She has made some Ethiopian friends, one of whom, a woman named Meselu, runs a "big woman's" store across the street from Katya's business.

Katya had been thinking of adoption for some time; she didn't want to go through an agency in America because it pissed her off that while agencies give the birth mother full disclosure regarding the adoptive parent, there is no reciprocity. She didn't want to go through a foreign agency because most of them require a two-year wait, and she felt that, at forty-nine, she was already too old. She learned through someone on the Internet — a woman in California who'd already adopted an Ethiopian child — that independent adoptions there were relatively easy. It helped, of course, that Meselu could hook her up with people in Addis Ababa, including a driver named Yonas, who specialized in clients there to adopt.

When Katya asked me if I would go to Africa with her, I said yes, because Thomas had died four months earlier and I had still not gone back to teaching. In the emptiness of my life, it didn't seem to matter what I did; between doing nothing and doing something, it seemed better to do something. Thomas and I had never had children, and, maybe without thinking about it, I wanted to help my friend give a child safe passage. Katya had never been lucky with men and I knew she had always envied my marriage; perhaps I was hoping to balance my loss with something good for her. In any case, before I left I took Thomas' wedding ring from the altar I had made in our bedroom, took my own ring from my finger, and put them both on a gold chain around my neck.

When Yonas came to pick us up at the hotel, he told us that every Saturday in May people in Addis Ababa come out to get married, and that our hotel was an especially popular spot because of the gardens. Yonas was a young man with a beautiful face and a profound feeling of age about him. When we told him how heavenly the weddings had seemed to us, he gravely bobbed his head and made the quick, sharp inhalation that we were beginning to understand as 'yes.' He held the door of his rattling Soviet car for us and said something I couldn't understand. We got in, sank into the broken, reeking cushions, down almost to the floor.

We couldn't go to the orphanage on a Saturday, so Yonas took us up into the mountains, a trip I remember in the way I remember my dream that morning. I remember getting out of the car to stand at the top of a steep street, with big, broken stones on each side of us, and looking down at a jumble of shanties and tiny houses careering up and down a hill. Further out of the city we saw houses made of mud and gray thatch that appeared soft as hair from a distance; there was one house surrounded by a beautiful fence made of light, slender branches of all shapes and sizes linked in a winding, nearly musical pattern, varied by the curves of certain branches that suddenly and softly digressed before returning to the music of the pattern. Big flowers grew through the branches in random places, spilling their pink petals. There was a woman in the yard with a bright red scarf on her head. The sky was full of soft, swollen clouds.

That night we had dinner with Meselu's relatives. We were taken to the house by Meselu's uncle who spoke a little English; we brought huge bundles of clothes, batteries, and toiletries that Meselu had sent. The house was behind a high stone wall with an archway bowered with thick-growing plants.

The head of the family was a matriarch named Zeyneb, who served us a spread with dozens of little meat dishes — goat, beef and lamb in a variety of sauces with a grain called teff. Zeyneb sat at the head of the table in a crimson dress and passed the dishes in a formal manner. Most of her family was there — one of her two daughters, three of her four sons, and six grandchildren. The uncle translated as well as his skill would allow. We couldn't understand a lot of it; we heard something about the election and the government. Zeyneb said something about adoption and things being different than they had been. The grandchildren talked loudly and happily among themselves, listening sideways to the translations of our speech. Zeyneb asked how many children I had. When I said none, one of the little girls looked at me piercingly.

That night we went to bed early — we had to. The power was out and it got too dark to read by 8:30. We lay in the dark and talked for a long time. We talked about the jumbled streets, Zeyneb, the mountains, and the fence — which, we agreed, would cost thousands of dollars in the States. It was almost cold, and so we slept with the windows shut; the muffled street sound had a lulling effect. Katya said she was too excited to sleep, but she drifted off quickly; it was I who stirred all night, unable to sleep or to stay fully awake. The wedding music from the morning crowded my mind, the bright colors and smiles, the running girls, the laughing woman. Cars mingled with donkeys; a little boy blew a horn. Beggars came bursting out of the wedding crowd, shouting. One of them was a boy I had seen that morning, and tried not to notice, a boy with a gouged-out eye socket. We emptied our purses — I gave the gouged boy handfuls of coins — but it was not enough.

I touched the wedding rings around my neck; Thomas appeared to me and sat on the bed. I stretched out my hand to him; the street crowd vanished. I remembered Thomas inside me. Once I said "I want you inside me all the time," and he answered "I will be." Children peered around a dark corner — first they were Zeyneb's grandchildren, then they were unborn children waiting for Thomas and me to conceive them. Among them was the boy with the gouged eye, not begging but waiting to be born. "I want you now," I whispered. Thomas replied, "I am here," but faintly. Chanting sounded. It was haunting, stern, implacable as a machine made of powerful feelings cut away from their source. Rules, I thought. Punishment: it's coming. Chanting filled the suffocating room. "Shut up!" I hissed, "Just shut the [expletive] up!"

Katya stirred and murmured "What?"

"This noise, what is it?"

"Zeyneb said it's from the churches. Go back to sleep, it's going to go on all day."

Sudan’s spy chief praises security cooperation with Ethiopia

March 13, 2009 (Al-DAMAZIN) – The head of security and intelligence service praised the security cooperation between Sudan and Ethiopia saying the two neighboring countries made a considerable progress.

Salah Abdellah Gosh was speaking Friday at the opening session of the 11th conference of Sudan –Ethiopia border development in Al-Damazin, the capital of the Blue Nile state. The meeting was attended by the chief of Ethiopian security and intelligence service.

The Ethiopian opposition denounced in the past the arrest and extradition of some of its members to Addis Ababa by the Sudanese authorities.

Gosh asserted today that policies and stances of security services in the neighboring countries were in harmony. He further stressed that Sudanese and Ethiopian security agencies had adopted dialogue in security issues.

Ethiopia, in the past, expressed worry about the movement of the Oromo rebels who enter Sudan from Eritrea and cross to Ethiopia.

The Sudan’s spy chief also called for vigilance and the need to not give a chance for predators who want to harm the strong relations between the two countries.

The opening session was attended by the Sudanese interior minister and the minister of federal government as well as the governor of the Blue Nile. However the Ethiopian delegation was headed by the governor of Gambella.

Also, the official SUNA thoroughly covered the conference but the Ethiopian official news agency ENA skipped the event.

Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir had to lead a high level delegation for an annual meeting between the two countries on March 10. But Bashir cancelled his trip without any explanation.

Ethiopia which is not a state party to Rome Statue related to the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced its support to the Sudanese President. The world court issued an arrest warrant against Bashir on March 4.

(OLF News, March 9, 2009) The brutal Woyane regime of Ethiopia once again targeted the Oromo students learning at colleges and universities of the Empire and arrested over 80 Oromo students from Bahir Dar university alone OLF News correspondent reported from Finfinnee (Addis Ababa). The Ethiopian government ordered their gun men, brutally beaten many Oromo students and arrested over 80 of them simply because they peacefully requested that some individuals who are obsessed with throwing derogatory remarks over the Oromo Nation should be brought to justice according to the law of the land.

OLF News reporters added that the Woyane governments Federal police and security forces are still searching to apprehend more Oromo students in Bahir Dar which is the capital city of the Amhara regional state. It has to be noted that almost all of the Oromo students who are now assigned to the Amhara regional state for university education were educated in Afan Oromo and English alone, and hence do not speak Amharic at all, and even those who can barely speak Amharic can easily be identified and are seen as aliens in the Bahir Dar town and in the entire Amhara regional state. Consequently, the students have no where to escape and are being brutally beaten by the forces of the regime in their dormitories. Our report added that many female students have also been brutally beaten and thrown into jail. Those who are wounded are left with out any medical treatment the report added.

The Oromo students in Bahir Dar University appealed to governmental, non-governmental and humanitarian organizations in general and to the Oromo people in particular to raise their voices on their behalf and rescue their lives.

Meanwhile one student was killed and many others wounded and thrown into jail in Gedo high school Western Shoa zone of Oromia regional state when high school students protested against a similar deragotary remarks thrown to the Oromo nation. Stay tuned with OLF News for the details of this report.

OLF News correspondent from Finfinnee (Addis Ababa) reported that the TPLF led Ethiopian government security forces shot several Oromo students of Western Shoa zone of Gedo high school with live bullets on March 3, 2009, out of which one students named Wondimmuu Daammanaa is confirmed dead and two others are in critical condition. The government forces in addition have apprehended over 30 other students and one teacher and their where about is unknown. One farmer is also among those who were shot and is said to be in critical condition as well.

Our reporter added that prior to the shooting a derogatory writing which targeted the Oromo nation was distributed in the school campus by an unknown person who claims to be from Amhara ethnic group. At this time a committee composed of both the Amhara and Oromo students was formed to investigate the identity of the person who prepared the writing in order to create conflict among Oromo and Amhara students. On the morning of the shooting the students were asking the school director regarding the identity of the person who insulted the Oromo people. When the students were waiting for an answer from the school director, suddenly a shooting was opened to the students by the Federal police known as “Fetno Darash”, who had already surrounded the school campus, directly targeting the students indiscriminately and the students who survived the bullets escaped in all directions out of the school.

On the other hand our inside sources revealed that the writing was actually prepared by the local officials of the government itself for the purpose of inciting conflict between Amhara and Oromo people in the region. It is a known strategy of the current TPLF regime which is composed a minority Tigrean ethnic group from the northern part of the Empire to incite conflict between different ethnic groups, particularly between the two major nations of the Oromo and Amhara nations, for the purpose of gaining a political benefit.

Meanwhile, OLF News correspondent reported that the brutal Woyane regime of the Ethiopian government has arrested over 80 Oromo students from Bahir Dar university alone, many of them brutally beaten, when the students demanded that those who insulted the Oromo nation with their derogatory remarks/ writings should be brought to justice. In Oromiya regional administration, west Shawa Zone, government forces killed Wondimu Damana, a 12th grade Gedo High School student. The soldiers also injured Belay Motuma and another female student.

“During the shooting incident, one student was killed, two were injured; and over 30 students, 1 teacher and 1 development assistant of Oromo national origin were taken into custody,” MP and leader of the Oromo People’s Congress Dr. Marara Gudina told the VOA.

Asked about the cause of the attacks, Gudina said that students discovered a derogatory letter written in Amharic in the school.

Students said the letter was intended to incite conflict between students of Amhara and Oromo nationalities.

Upon the realization of the denigrating nature of the letter to the Oromo people, students from both groups requested the school director to investigate the source of the letter.

On 3 March 2009, the students gathered in the school to hear the outcome of the investigation from the school director, when the elite force suddenly surrounded the school and opened fire.

Chaliya district’s local administrator, Mr. Galata Nagasa commented that government forces took the action to “protect the constitutional order”, which is always cited by government officials to justify violence.

“Fatino Darash” is the name for locally stationed government elite/special forces, established to squash dissent and disband rallies. They are notorious for taking similar actions against students and peaceful dissidents in west Shewa zone in particular and Oromiya in general.

Ethiopian soldiers enjoy impunity after carrying out brutal and segregationist attacks. In fact, they are known to have been rewarded for discriminating and killing Oromo students and opponents of the Ethiopian government over the last 18 years.

The rewards take forms of promotion to higher military ranks, salaries and reassignments to other areas.

The 2009 US State Department report on human rights in Ethiopia, documents widespread extra-judicial killings, arrests, and imprisonment of Oromo students and dissidents in Oromiya regional state in Ethiopia.

We have resorted to this open letter since both you and your State Minister: Mohamoda Ahmed Gass, will not respond to any attempts to discuss or settle this very serious matter in private since December 2007 . .This letter may be freely distributed.
Your Excellency

I write as a final reminder that all fess and production costs due to us, pursuant to an informal written guarantee issued by your State Minister Mohamoda Gass, for the hosting of Miss Tourism of the Millennium that we produced for Ethiopia 18 months ago and which were due for settlement on 3rd December 2007 still remain unpaid and unsettled by your Ministry, For 18 months since the event took place we have been waiting for your Ministry to settle this matter and honour your obligations honourably and with Integrity, but instead your Ministry has for 18 months deliberately chosen to ignore it's financial obligations because apparently we do not live in Ethiopia and are a foreign company, and instead has resorted to blaming everyone you can for not being able to settle this matter honorable as agreed.

Sir, it has now been 18 months and counting since we Organised this event for the benefit of your Country ,Government and most especially your countries New Millennium Celebrations in October 2007, we invested and spent our hard earned money on Trust believing your Ministry to be trustworthy and Ethical in its conduct of business, but instead and to date not one single penny was ever paid for this event and our Production costs were never reimbursed, your Ministry set up an Elaborate Organising committee that featured several government ministries such as

and others supposedly as sponsorship fees payable to us and in the name of Miss Tourism of the Millennium event, this money was due to be paid to us for the promotional services we provided by Bringing this event to Ethiopia, but instead every single penny of this money simply disappeared under your ministries control and 18 months later we have not seen a penny.

I am not sure if your ministry is now designated as commercial enterprise or business, where it "Collects money for International Beauty Pageants and keeps it?" nor does the Ministry of Culture and Tourism under your control have any right or mandate to obtain any service from anybody and then refuse to pay for it latter by simply claiming "We don't have any money" in law that is known as obtaining "Services by Deception" and abusue of officie or fraudulent behaviour, but maybe there was a new proclamation in Ethiopia mandating the Ministry of Culture and Tourism under your control to do this that we were not aware of? In any case I also question if Ministry of Culture and Tourism ever paid any taxes on the 1.8 million birr or on any other revenue, it collected as a direct result of the event, but never paid to us, or is Ministry of Culture and Tourism also immune from public accounting and or taxation of revenue? The questions just seem to keep mounting up

Sir, after 18 months and counting we feel it is high time you did the honourable and responsible thing, step-up to the plate, and honour all your Ministries financial obligations to us. it is not our desire to take the Ministry of Culture and Tourism or this matter to court, nor is it in your Governments interest to be in the dock over such a matter concerning integrity and honesty, after 18 Months, we have been patient enough and simply ask you to display a level of Professional behaviour, honour and ethics commensurate with your position as a Government Minister, and settle this matter once and for all, there is no reason why Ministry of Culture and Tourism under your control have not paid anything even if according to your State Minster: "Sheik Al Amoudi promised and then failed to help you pay some of the costs", you know fully well we never had any discussions or agreement with the Sheik, and as far as we know the Sheik is not part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, so Sheik Al Amoudi's promise [ or not, .... we don't know] should never be used as any excuse for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism failure to honour its financial obligations 18 months later. the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is a federally funded Ministry of the Democratic Republic of Ethiopia ,fully under your control and not an extension of Sheik Al Amoudi's business empire.

· Fact: We executed the Project for the Ethiopian Government and People under instructions and a Written Guarantee issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism under your control 18 months ago [ not by Shehik Al Amoudi ]

· Fact You are the Minister in charge of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and cannot tell us you don't know anything about this event or your Ministries outstanding obligations to us.

· Fact: Once the event took place the Ministry of Culture and Tourism under your control has so far refused to pay the any of hosting cost or even the prizes to the winners, in short you have not pais a single penny for this event since 2007 you have instead given every excuse under the sun.

· Fact: the Ministry of Culture and Tourism under your control did not pay a single penny to us since 2007 for organising this preferring to claime a budget deficit, and other excuses, all Agreements entered into by you minisitirty even Informal and formal and legally enforcacable

· Fact: We will initiate Legal proceeding if the Ministry of Culture and Tourism continues to ignore the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's obligation to us and settle this matter Honourably

· Fact You and other Government minsters we only to happy to attend press conferences and be VIP's pose for photos, crowning the girls with Crowns and sashes that none of paid for, I attach photos as a reminder in case after 18 months you need your memory to be jogged

With all these facts in mind one would respectfully ask how you and your state Minister Mohamouda Gass can sleep well at night and then carry on Business the next day for over 18 months as normal, knowing fully well in spite of the Grand event we produced for your Countries Millennium, what you have done since then is to say the least highly unethical? Is it also any wonder that this event has not returned to Ethiopia, and no such event will ever return to Ethiopia, if this is how The Ministry of Culture and Tourism conducts Business with the international Community.

Mohamouda Gass your state Minister Mohamouda Gass even flew to London England met with me in 2007 and introduced me to the Ethiopian Ambassador to UK and Mohamouda Gass gave his word and gurantee regarding Paying for this event but till now your Administration is not wiling to pay us a single penny after geting the servicceIn spite of the wonderful Global platform for the promotion of Ethiopian Culture and Tourism we presented to The Ministry of Culture and Tourism, your subordinate State Minister and staff have killed it of, buy abuse of Office and trust, and surprisingly despite your capacity as the head of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, you stand by and just say you don't know what is going on, and refuse to take any responsibility or initiate any steps to resolve this outstanding issue?

Is it any wonder how Miss World and Miss Universe have been going strong for over 50 years, but the one time an International beauty pageant was held in Ethiopia for the first time in History it was killed of by a combination of Greed, short sightedness, deliberate financial mismanagement and gross incompetence by very Ministry that is mandated to promote Ethiopian Culture Tourism, maybe The Ministry of Culture and Tourism have something bigger in the pipe line for 2009, but if The Ministry of Culture and Tourism can't honestly handle just 37 International beauty Queens coming to Ethiopia to celebrate your Millennium without making a such big mess of it where 18 months later The Ministry of Culture and Tourism have not paid a penny and instead chooses to cry poverty, It is sincerely doubtful that the Ministry of Culture and Tourism can manage anything bigger. may I respectfully point out that this is the reason this event was not held in Ethiopia again last year. Poverty is not a badge one wears with pride or delight.

Once again we call on you to respect your position as an Ethiopian Government Minister and act with the highest amount of Ethics, Integrity and honour that comes with such a position, business must always be conducted at the highest level of transparency and ethics..

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism is not staffed with Taxi drivers and Shoe shine boys all used to and looking to Hustle foreigners out of their money and make a quick buck off them, so kindly see that this matter is settled without any further excuses or delays or the need to go to litigation Enough is enough and enough respect and patience has been given to The Ministry of Culture and Tourism to settle this matter. ignoring all our communications will simply not suffice anymore.

Budget deficit or not, there is no reason why since 2007 and 18 months later The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has not paid us even a single penny unless, The Ministry of Culture and Tourism and your State Minister never intended to pay for the service in the first place, and this was a just carefully planned elaborate deception all along.

However thankfully we have documented everything for the world to see if need be. I trust that will not be necessary?

Saudi Arabia has announced the arrival of the first food crop harvested in Saudi-owned farms abroad, in a sign that the kingdom is moving faster than expected to outsource agricultural production.

Rice, harvested in famine-hit Ethiopia by a group of Saudi investors, was presented to King Abdullah recently and comes as other countries are still in the early stages of investing in overseas farms.

The Ethiopian origin is likely to raise concerns about the trend to outsource food production to poor African countries, some of which suffer from chronic hunger.

In the past year the United Nations World Food Programme has helped to feed 11m people in Ethiopia, which has suffered crop failures and food distribution problems.

Some analysts argue that foreign investment in agriculture, even if earmarked for export, could ultimately help poor countries, providing them with employment, infrastructure, access to agricultural technology and export tax revenues.

However, western agriculture officials familiar with the Saudi plans say they are sceptical that the kingdom's investment in food production overseas will help poor countries such as Ethiopia.

Riyadh has also provided the most detailed account to date of food-security plans known as the "King Abdullah initiative for Saudi agricultural investment abroad".

Since the oil-rich kingdom announced last summer that it planned to grow "strategic food commodities" overseas and phase out the waterintensive production of domestic cereals, few details had emerged.

But in a note posted on its foreign affairs website, Riyadh has disclosed that it will "provide credit facilities to Saudi investors in agriculture abroad", with the focus on "countries with promising agricultural resources and having encouraging government". It did not say how much money it would make available in credits.

, a Saudi company, said last month that it would invest in agricultural production in Sudan, with the government providing 60 per cent of the funding.

The Jeddah-based Islamic Development BankIslamic Development Bank said this week that it was looking at investments to support agriculture, including the production of rice to be exported back to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi officials have so far visited Turkey, Ukraine, Egypt, Sudan, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brazil, South Africa and Ethiopia, while delegations from other countries, including Australia, have visited Riyadh to discuss possible investments.

The investments "should be long-term through ownership or long-term contracts", and Riyadh expects the "liberty of selecting the crops".

The pursuit of foreign farm investments is the clearest sign of how last year's price spikes in commodities such as rice, wheat and corn, and the global food crisis that ensued, are reshaping the politics of agriculture.

The move is not only a response to high prices, but also to the export restrictions imposed by leading providers of commodities - including India, Russia, Argentina and Vietnam. These exporters banned overseas sales to keep their local markets well-supplied and some of the restrictions remain in force.

Ethiopian cattle-herding tribe crowns new king

BADHAASAA, Ethiopia (AP) — A cattle-herding tribe in southern Ethiopia has crowned a new king in a secret ceremony considered so sacred that the Borena people believe it has the power to kill unauthorized observers.

Guyyoo Gobbaa is spending the three days following his inauguration Tuesday drinking warm beer under an acacia tree and eating goat meat with various elders and government officials, some of whom walked hundreds of miles to his village.

Like his predecessors, Guyyoo was chosen from birth to serve an eight-year term in a system that rotates power between the tribe's top clans and is as difficult to explain to outsiders as the American electoral college.

"If you see them exchanging power you'll die," said Mohammed Nur, a member of the Borena tribe who is also a local government official. "You'll spit blood. It is totally sacred."

The Borena king is recognized as an Ethiopian government official and his duties will include mediating in land disputes between tribes.

Traditional rulers exist alongside formal government in many African countries, and their behind-the scenes influence can help or hinder vital national interests.

In the oil-rich Niger Delta, chiefs in top hats and coral beads have sponsored peace talks between rival militant gangs and helped free foreign hostages. In Uganda, the government has legally limited the traditionally independent kingdoms to cultural custodians, but they can use their influence to encourage people to take part in campaigns like the one trying to limit the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Guyyoo, a 36-year-old cattle farmer, has promised to fix his 1 million people's ailing economy by improving access to livestock markets and patching up relations with other tribes.

Desertification and punishing droughts are gradually pushing Guyyoo's people to seek pasture for their cattle and camel herds further and further from home, bringing them into conflict with other tribes already settled on those lands.

Guyyoo's official seal of power is a whip made of rhinoceros and giraffe parts, but he says he does not intend to use it, preferring diplomacy.

"My main aim is to uphold this traditional culture," he said. "Not only for Borena. For the whole of Ethiopia."

The Borena say their system, which dates back more than 550 years, relies on co-operation between the clans to ensure peaceful transitions and limits the potential damage caused by a bad king to eight years.

But even as they hail their new king, perhaps the advantages of a different form of governance have not been entirely lost on the Borena.

The 2-month-old son of Mohammed, the government official, is not eligible for the Borena kingship under traditional rules. But little Barack's father — so named after Mohammed's wife lost her plea to name the boy Obama — demurred before ruling him out.

"I don't know," he said when asked about the future. "Maybe we won't want the traditional power. Maybe we'll want the democratic one."

Leggesse Wogi’s family, a senior Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) rebel field commander who martyred on a war against Meles’s regime [Ethiopia] troops for liberation in October 2008, escaped prosecution by Ethiopian government securities and left the country for exile. Weyineshet Getahun (Leggesse’s wife), Netsanet Leggesse and Frihewet Leggesse (daughters), and other family member Embet Gezahegne were the few lucky Oromos to escape the extra- judicial killings.

Mostly the Meles regime made OLF as culprit for the bombings occasionally occurred in the capital city Addis Ababa which Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) denies as a false and set up allegation. In October 2008 Meles Zenawi told parliament that the government had confirmed that all bombings this year in Addis Ababa were the work of the OLF. Apart from the cases noted above, no credible evidence has been presented to verify these claims. Meantime the civilians were the victims both in the accident and in the move the Ethiopian security forces took actions under the label of investigation. Consequently, human right abuses reported by humanitarians and human right organizations, at local and international levels for years, included unlawful killings, torture, beating, abuse and mistreatment of detainees and opposition supporters by security forces, usually with impunity; poor prison conditions; arbitrary arrest and detention, particularly of suspected sympathizers or members of opposition or insurgent groups (Refer U.S. Department of State, 2008 Human Rights Reports: Ethiopia, February 25, 2009).

In September 2008 more than hundred Oromos were arrested including opposition party leaders and put to jail in charge of supporting Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). The Ethiopian government accuses categorically Oromos by ethnicity supporting OLF. Harassment, detention and mass arrest usually occurs as a result. As Meles’s government and armed conflict supporters remain hostile human right violations are proliferating across the country.

Back Ground Information:

After the military junta [Derg] regime was ousted from power in 1991 by armed struggle from Tigrayi, Eritrea, Oromo, Amhara, and southern Ethiopian peoples, Tigrayi – led Ethiopian government was established. Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), which yielded bedrock support from their respective nations, were forced out of the transitional government that paved way for Tgrayi People Liberation Front (TPLF), which is a minority to control all political, military and economic power in Ethiopia. Since then OLF and ONLF remained in armed conflict with Meles regime. The government faced armed opposition from the Oromo liberation Front (OLF) and the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) both gaining mass support of the people. Thousands of the people remained in indefinite and mainly incommunicado detention without charge or trial in connection particularly with the armed conflicts in Oromia and Somali regions, and arbitrary and mass arrest continued. In connection with general election held May 2005 thousands were put to jail, and more than hundreds were shot dead on the street of the capital city.
